Hashtags of the Week (HOTW): World Down Syndrome Day (Week of March 18, 2013)

Thursday was World Down Syndrome Day, an awareness day recognized by the United Nations, that encourages international awareness and advocacy. Twitter had quite a few posts from a variety of countries, perspectives and hashtags. I was perusing #WDSD when I came across this:

My first reaction was, “These people have lost their minds! What do socks have to do with Down Syndrome?” followed quickly by, “D’awww, that dog is so cute.” Come to find out socks have a lot to do with the “Lots of Socks” campaign for Down Syndrome Awareness. They ask people to wear brightly colored socks to attract questions and attention as well as add an extra sock to represent the extra chromosome that causes DS. There were a TON of great sock pictures out there.

Other hashtags that were showing their support for World Down Syndrome Day were #downsyndrome and #dsresearch. There was quite a bit of focus in all the hashtags on the use of the R-Word. Patricia Anderson recently blogged about the social media campaigns focused on ending the R-Word. There were also quite a few mentions of research initiatives in both genomics and cognitive science focused on DS.
