I bet you all thought I was being quiet because I was on vacation or holiday or something like that. Wrong! I spent an unbelievable amount of time over the past couple weeks working on my portion of an article a few of us are submitting about Nursing education in Second Life. My portion of it was intended to be a quick overview of emerging technologies and virtual worlds as used in education (generally), healthcare, and nursing. I think I might have a whole article of its own coming out of this, but, wow, did I find a lot of fascinating things while I was doing the background research for this. I will try to find time to share some of the highlights here over the next few weeks, just short little pieces with things I’ve found.

For today, here is something I found before the nursing article binge, and which I meant to share ages ago. I could spend weeks just talking about the concepts and ideas in this one slideshow, and still feel hopelessly inadequate. Briefly, this is from Cisco, almost a sales pitch but framed in the context of a vision of the impending future of computing systems. Think big fluffy clouds, lots of them, all interconnected. Instead of the InterNet, or the InterWeb, or the “InterTubes”, you get the InterCloud. You won’t really think of your data as having a particular space anymore, not like, “Oh, my stuff lives in that cluster of servers on North Campus.” And I remember the days when people on campus would ask which server you lived on, UB, or UM or MERIT. At Northwestern the servers were named after local popular student restaurants, and my account lived on Casbah. Nope, not anymore. Hope you enjoy it!

Last August I worked on the Enterprise Social Media series, which continues more slowly, and recently I’ve been working largely on the FDASM series about new policy guideline development there. I recently stumbled on a couple resources I wanted to share with you here, and which relate to both of these main topics.

The Social Media Governance site has a LOT of things relevant to the whole Enterprise 2.0 topic. Worth exploring in general, but if you are doing either implementation or administration of any social media initiative, you MUST check out the Policy Database. This collects social media policies and guidelines from various organizations, and groups them by type of industry. Absolutely essential reading. The Healthcare section (shown here) has a collection of types of social media guidelines already being used in different places, from clinical environments to academia to insurance to pharma. It absolutely should be reviewed by anyone involved in the FDASM process.

Social Media Governance: Policy Database: http://socialmediagovernance. com/policies.php?f=4

On a related note, the whole question of the balance between transparency and privacy in social media is core to all of our lives these days. Here are two very useful taxonomies also relevant to the policy development process, and which could be applied to determining levels of privacy for different types of information and audiences in healthcare (as well as others).

Taxonomy of Social Networking and Privacy: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2009/11/a_taxonomy_of_s.html

I’ve been concerned about the archived videos of the FDASM webcast disappearing this week. I’ve heard from so many people that they don’t have time to watch them, and that it is too hard to find the interesting parts in the two eight-hour chunks of video currently available. Perhaps the transcripts will be a little more accessible? It is still a thousand pages of content, but perhaps easier to skim. The transcripts can be downloaded here (bottom of the page):

In the meantime, here is a Wordle visualization of the most frequently repeated terms from the transcripts. Click through for higher resolution versions.

Since this discussion has come up about how the FDA might regulate conversation within social media, I’ve been talking about it to everyone who stands still briefly. Basically, I think this is IMPORTANT.

So when I was asked to talk about FDASM in Second Life to an international group of health care consumers, educators and advocates, I said, “When? This weekend?”

There was a great discussion there, which will take me a little time to pull together, so that will come in a few days, I hope.

I figured anything I put together for them would be useful for other groups as well, so put the slides in Slideshare and here, thinking they might be useful for background in preparing for our campus forum on the FDASM the last week of January.

This isn’t new. It was at least a year, year and a half ago when I attended a wonderful presentation by our very own Jacob Glenn on the subject of semantic technologies (a.k.a. “Web 3.0″) and how they could be used in libraries. I particularly glommed onto the idea of microformats, which seemed immensely useful to me, for many many purposes.

Unfortunately, Jacob didn’t feel he could put his slides in Slideshare, which meant I couldn’t easily reshare his content with you. He still hasn’t, at least not where I can find them, so I was happy to find these presentations on semantic technologies and trends in libraries. From my point of view, the real power is similar to augmented reality, in that the strengths and power of the libraries are embedded throughout their surrounding environments, both analog and virtual.

This presentation is wonderful, engaging, well-designed, worth downloading, and be sure to take a look at his other presentations on the same topic.

The FDA had a Public Forum on November 12-13 to collect suggestions for their forthcoming social media and online presence guidelines. I’ve been hoping for people to watch the FDASM Public Forum videos with me, but it hasn’t happened yet. Part of the problem is the way the FDA has made them available.

What they did:
– Two links.
– 8 hours of video each.

What I wish they’d done:
– 60 speakers.
– 9 minutes each.
– each individual presentation in YouTube and Vimeo.

A few presenters downloaded the entire video (each link takes 8 hours to download) and then snipped out their section and posted it online. You can understand why not everyone has done this. (What a pain!)

I started collecting these (gee, I’m SUCH a librarian sometimes), and we’re in conversations trying to get permissions to help those who did not post theirs in YouTube to do so.

This playlist collects some of the presentations and interviews that surrounded this event.

FDASM Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/user/perplexitypeccable#g/c/C1A3ED9EF1F5BB8E

The FDA guidelines will very likely shape non-health guidelines for social media and may very well impact on health communications in broader spheres, especially that of information professionals, health advocates, and potentially the general public. Please see http://fdasm.com for more information on how you can contribute to the dialog.

WordPress won’t allow me to embed the playlist here, so I have done so at the Health Sciences Libraries blog. You can browse the list at YouTube or just start watching at the other blog.

A couple of us did so, and you will see a few quirky or extraneous comments from the general public as well.

The meeting included some updates for campus communicators as well as some discussions and brief presentations from the social media working groups. These are the notes from the meeting, being archived here. The coding for the table was cribbed from What The Hashtag, which is a tool I highly recommend.

Here are even more resources for people exploring the FDA’s engagement with social media and the conversation around what guidelines we want to see come from this. The previous blogpost mentioned a few, but not the core ones that are shaping the whole discussion. These are the core places where your attention should focus.

The most important one-stop shop. Please note this excellent site aggregates much of the actual discussion about this via social media, and is unaffiliated with the FDA who (near as I can tell) did not utilitize social media to either promote the discussion or engage in it. In my humble opinion, they could have taken some lessons from another government unit, the Smithsonian, who did a brilliant job of engaging the public in planning their engagement with social media.

FDASM: http://www.fdasm.com/

Google spreadsheet from the same folk (yay, Fabio!), collecting information and resources about the FDASM process, contributions, links, slides, and much more.

This isn’t the first thing to do, but it is the most important. Either as individuals or in groups, place comments in the docket at Regulations.gov. Please note, this is:

Docket No. FDA-2009-N-0441: http://www.regulations.gov/search/Regs/home.html#searchResults?Ne=11+8+8053+8098+8074+8066+8084+1&N=0
